Once upon a time when the Web was just beginning to emerge from the halls of academia, web directories were all the rage. If you wanted to find out if anyone had created a website on, say freshwater fishing, odds were good you would be able to find it in one of the half-dozen directories out there, like AltaVista, Yahoo, or Excite. Then the Web grew. Directories, which had morphed into portals, weren t cutting it anymore. The Web was too big, and 1,500 listings are almost as useless as none. So, about a decade ago, a couple of very bright Stanford University students figured out a cool way to better search the Web, and Google was born. Then the Web grew some more, and web logs became blogs, and almost overnight, millions of people were blogging. In the previous discussion, we talked about the three layers of an application. To reiterate, an application has a presentation layer, a business logic layer, and a data access layer (refer to Figure 1-15). Generally, these layers are separate and run on different machines. For example, you usually see the presentation on a Web server and the business logic and data access layers on an application server. But you sometimes have applications where all three layers are bundled together. When this is the case, you have a one-tier architecture. Similarly, when the presentation is separate from the business logic and data access layers, you have a two-tier architecture. When each of the layers lies on different machines, you have a three-tier architecture (see Figure 1-16).
