The repository pattern, which is fundamentally the same as the Data Access Object (DAO) pattern often seen in the Java world, is a proven technique for decoupling your domain model from your database. As you will see in detail in the Persistence Ignorance section later in this chapter, and in 8 during implementation, keeping your model independent from the ORM, database, and provider- or vendor-specific technologies is paramount to a reusable domain model. Using this pattern is a proven method for accomplishing this decoupling. Additionally, by building in this layer between your domain model and your ORM, the backing data store becomes irrelevant. Granted, in this text you will be exploring only relational database access. However, by using the DAO pattern, you can more easily change the backing data store without having to adjust the model itself. Unlike many of the other examples in this chapter, there really isn t a good nontechnical example for this pattern because this pattern is inherently technical. Figure 2-19 demonstrates the basic sequence involved in utilizing the DAO. As you can see in this example, our domain object interacts with our DAO, which in turn communicates through the ORM engine to the database. We have already decided that you should never directly instantiate an object, and the same holds true for our DAO. As you can see in Figure 2-20, we have expanded our example to include a DAO factory that will be used for creation of our DAOs to provide greater encapsulation and control.

With our graphic in place, we can now amend the code to display it on the screen. This is very simple and consists only of modifications to Game1.cs, so ensure that it is open in the code editor. First of all, we need to add a class-level object into which our graphic image will be stored. The object type for this is Texture2D, and so we declare it, as shown in Listing 2 1, just below the existing spriteBatch declaration. Listing 2 1.
